Contemporary issues in sound art – blog post 3 – changing ideas

During the process of making my sound piece for Element 2, I became quite uninspired by the original project which was working on the remix of “Insomnia” by Faithless. I want to keep the same concept which is still inspired by “Silence (edit)” by Soul Mass Transit System.

I then got the idea of doing a remix of “Born slippy” by Underworld.

After multiple demo versions of both tracks I then decided to start clean slate and look into more of Soul Mass Transit Systems productions for a new direction

ARTIST PROFILE –

SOUL MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM

Not much is known about Soul Mass Transit System as since they started making music they kept their identities secret by wearing balaclavas and covering their faces in every photo. From the few interviews they have done in the past, we can see it is a duo consisting of D. Jason and Baby J and not much more is known.

It is only recently that at least one of the members has been seen publicly with their boiler room set recently released but it’s not even clear if the person seen is D. Jason or Baby J.

The set has been the most talked about set in the scene since its release, from playing some of their most sought-after dubplates such as their remix of “the bomb” by the Bucketheads

As well as “soul mass transit system” they also release music under their multiple aliases such as “Fritz Schnackenpfefferhausen” and “Curtis E. Bear” continuing the theme of naming their projects after niche references from the simpsons

Fritz Schnackenpfefferhausen takes a lot of inspiration from Hard House, trance music and organ speed garage. the 1st project released under the name was released in March of 2022 and contained what they described as “2 succulent slabs of big room new school clubland from the illusive Fritz Schnackenpfefferhausen.“(soul mass transit system, 2022)

The name Curtis E. Bear is used for releasing very heavy 2000’s inspired bassline garage similar to artists like Silva Bumpa and Jamie Duggan and has only had 1 release so far but has a lot of unreleased and very sought after tracks doing the rounds among some of the biggest artists in the garage scene right now such as Interplanetary Criminal and Skeptic.
