Contemporary issues in sound art – The use of Ai in music production blog post 2 – Stem separation

In 2001 Martin Dawe was working on a new software called Photoscore. The concept for the app was to take scans of sheet music and then you would be able to convert them into music notation which would then be editable and playable. From the success of Photoscore, Dawe then went on to create other iterations of this software which would allow users to edit the harmonics of different audio files similar to what is now readily available in software like Melodyne. The next big step in this field didn’t come until 2022 when Serato released stem separation into their DJ software and then later in their production software, Serato Sample. This was really the first iteration of this technology that saw mainstream success in music production, this concept has now become massively advanced and is now an in built feature in FL Studio. My personal tool of choice is Vocalremover.org

The software that i find delivers the best quality stem separation is vocalremover.org.

From all of the softwares available that i have tried, in my opinion, i find that this one delivers the highest quality audio with the least amount of artefacts in the stems

Here i used vocalremover to split the stems of Insomnia by Faithless
